I started out the year by flying to New Orleans on January 1st where my brother Ray and 3 others picked me up at the airport. We were there to help with the rebuilding of the South after hurricane Rita and Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast in August 2oo5.We spent a wonderful week at the old library in Pass Christian Mississippi with a group called Campus Crusade for Christ.
Then we celebrated Gayles B'Day(39th I think?) in Cabo San Lucas. We stayed at the beautiful WorldMark Resort for 7 days and we only left one time!
We had purchased a new motorhome last November in Dublin, Texas and put it in storage in New Braunfels where my brother Ray and wife Rita make their home. They watched over it for us and in February we flew down to their home and spent a week with them. They took us to the Gulf where we stayed in Ritas Dads Condo at Port Aransas. Wow! A really awesome place. Then we headed back to New Braunfels and picked up the motorhome, an Airstream Landyacht. It is fantastic. 31 feet long with a slideout and all the hi-tech options available. We headed home the next morning and on the way we visited Fort Stockton, Tx where Black Soldiers were stationed. In 1855 the US Congress appropriated $30,000 as a trial to use camels in the military. The camels were given to the soldiers at Fort Stockton but later turned loose since they were more hassle than help. They roamed freely in Texas for years. We stopped off and visited friends in Tucson that we had met in Cabo,Dale and Donna. Then on to Las Vegas where we had a great time playing Texas Hold'em. Gayle won and I lost! So what else is new! We spent a wonderful 3 weeks on this trip and were looking foward to our next motorhome adventure!
We stayed around home during March and April.
In May we hopped a 10 day cruise to Alaska roundtrip from San Francisco. That was fantastic. We will do that again.
I was so impressed with the victims in Mississippi and their great attitudes in January that I decided to go back again. I met with some really great people at my home church and we formed an organization to respond to disasters in a supporting role. We put together a group of 10 volunteers (including myself and Gayle)and went back to Mississipi in June for another week. This time we joined forces with Camp Coast Care, a Lutheran-Episcopal relief organization in Long Beach, Mississippi. What a great experience we had. We already have 12 signed up to go with us again in February, 2007 including 2 contractors(one is my brother Ray)and an engineer. We are also bringing Alex our youth minister who will be working with us to create a contingent of youth volunteers ages 14 and up. That trip will be scheduled for June 2007.
After we got back from Mississippi we brought our daughter Tracys family to our WorldMark Resort in Clearlake for a week. My son-in-law Gary and my grandaughter Emma went fishing with me a couple of times in our boat. Emma loved driving it. Our other grandaughter Amy spent hours upon hours in the pool. She is definitely a waterdog! Gary and I went out with a guide one morning and caught 22 bass up to 5 pounds! Gayle and Tracy read alot and worked on their tans.
In August it was off in the motorhome again. This time we decided to go to Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Our Grandaughter Wendy went with us fot the first week but had to fly back to take her drivers test, which she aced! Her sister Nicole is in college and taking summer courses so she couln't go. Of course both Emma and Any were engaged in sports and horseback riding so they couldn't go either. I won't mention all the boys who would absolutely die if they couldn't see them for 3 weeks!!! We started by heading up the coast of California and spent the first night in Eureka. Then on to Coos Bay to visit Dottie and Larry. After a nice visit we were off to Brinnon Washington to spend some quality time with our adopted brother and sister, Dave and Rhonda. They are building a HUGE Mansion on the cliffs overlooking the Hood Canal, one of the most beautiful places on the planet!! We had our usual great time together eating and drinking while we tried to tell bigger and better stories than the other one did! We went out on Daves boat and loaded up with crab and had a great seafood buffet. His beach is loaded with oysters and even though we ate what we thought was a world record amount you couldn't even tell they were missing from the beach. Then Wendy had to fly home so we headed to Seattle to drop her off at the airport. My brother Richard who lives in Seattle was getting ready to head to Iraq as a civilian contractor working on helicopters so we spent the next 2 days with him. Then he had to leave and we sent him off with Godspeed and loads of love and prayers. We had a great time together. Their whole church came over for a going away party and my sister-in-law Suki cooked for 2 days to prepare. Then we headed east to Cour de Alene, Idaho. We stayed there one night and we were off to Flathead Lake,Montana. We spent 3 days there exploring all around the lake and just relaxing. When we left we promised to come back to fish and explore farther north into Glacier Nat'l Park. Next we were off to bozeman for the night then into Livingston where we spent a good deal of time in the Fly Fishing Federation Headquarters and Museum. That was a real interesting afternoon. Then we headed down towards the little town of Gardiner, MT which is right near the NW entance. I checked in with my fly fishing guide service then we went to the RV Park and set up camp. We passed lots of Bison(buffalo) on the way and saw our share of elk and deer. No bear or wolves though...DARN! I went fishing the next day and landed 15 or 20 cuthroat, rainbow and brown trout. What a great time! After several nights we moved down to Jackson Hole Wyoming passing the Grand Teton Mountain Range. WOW!!! Then we headed out through Idaho Falls into Eastern Oregon down to Birney Falls California. Then stopped in Reno overnight and back home. What a fabulous trip!
In September we went to the Big Island of Hawaii to stay at our Hilton Grand Vacations Club in Waikaloa for a week.
October we went to Fishermans Wharf for a few days and then stayed at home most of the month.
November found us in So. Cal at our son,Johnny and Daughter-in-laws Yvettes home in Redondo Beach. We spent 3 days with them then went on to the Hilton Grand Vacations Club in Las Vegas. We saw several shows. Mama Mia was fantastic! We planned to stay home in December but our sweet Aunt Dottie ended up in the Hospital in Coos Bay Oregon so off we went for 4 days to visit her and give Larry some much needed support. She is doing much better now.
